Job Description

A leading P&C insurance carrier is seeking a Director of Software Development to join their team. Responsible for closely working with business stakeholders across the company to understand, prioritize and assist in the production support of mission critical systems. In this role you will oversee a team of developers who architect, analyze, design, develop, integrate, test, implement and maintain a comprehensive system of applications critical to the daily operations.  The Director is accountable for the successful delivery of software deliverables and support for the organization.  This position is also responsible for the strategic development of the software architecture vision and leadership and all aspects of the development of the software.

Requirements

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and deliver a strategic technological vision and direction for the company’s system platform.
  • Oversee the management of daily operations tasks necessary to maintain a high quality, reliable portfolio of applications.
  • Oversee the vendor relationships for systems development and software that is maintained and/or developed by third parties.
  • Oversee assigned software architectures ensuring long term maintainability, reliability, and extensibility.
  • Research and approve new and existing technologies, evaluation of solutions alternatives, development of prototypes and generation of detailed technical requirements. 
  • Develop and implement agile software development methodologies, best practices, and standards to achieve the highest product quality while continuously improving performance and the productivity of the organization.
  • Define, deploy, and drive sustainable and repeatable process improvements through the entire life cycle.  Prioritize and manage resource allocation for the products based on changing business priorities and budget constraints.
  • Participate in the prioritization and coordination of systems enhancements, including the coordination of enhancements affecting multiple systems with the organization.
  • Manage the maintenance and presentation of the systems development roadmap, which provides the long-term vision for the Universal IT platforms.

  

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or similar. Masters Degree a plus
  • 9+ years of experience in Software, Information Technology, Information Services or Similar
  • 9+ years of experience in people management, leading teams, etc
  • 6+ years of experience in programming languages such as C#, .NET, Java, SQL
  • Advanced knowledge of SDLC including programming, design, servers, databases, problem solving, technical documentation, research required
  • Experience with Insurance preferred
  • Strong understanding of modern web development technologies in both front-end and back-end architectures using Javascript, .NET Visual Studio, Jquery, SQL Server, SSRS, SSIS
  • Experience with code structure, design patterns, continuous integration, object-oriented development using MVC, Gitlabs
  • Experience in web integration using Restful APIs, HTTP, JSON, SOAP, XML
  • Expertise of Guidewire products- Policy Center, Claim Center, Billing Center 
  • Experience integrating insurance policy administration systems such as Guidewire a plus
  • Ability to manage and provide mentorship to developers, managers, data and business analysts 
  • Experience architecting complex software solutions with a deep understanding of all application layers
  • Strong understanding of software development life cycle and project management concepts
  • Experience working both independently and in a team environment, preferably as part of an agile team
  • Experience working under tight deadlines efficiently and with high quality
