Job Description
Controller
A well-established and growing independent insurance agency is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting and financial operations. This is a hands-on leadership role with significant responsibility for financial reporting, commission revenue management, budgeting and forecasting, cash flow, and strategic financial support. The ideal candidate will have a strong accounting foundation, experience managing commission-based revenue, and the ability to partner closely with executive leadership in a high-volume, transaction-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Strategy & Leadership
- Partner with executive leadership on financial strategy, profitability, and growth initiatives.
- Support strategic initiatives including organic growth, acquisitions, and new revenue opportunities.
- Provide financial insight and analysis to support business decisions.
Commission Revenue Management
- Oversee commission accounting for both agency bill and direct bill revenue.
- Reconcile carrier statements and internal records to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Track and forecast contingent income.
- Oversee producer compensation and commission structures.
- Identify and improve processes related to billing and commission accuracy.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
- Analyze revenue and profitability across business lines, producers, and programs.
- Provide financial analysis, forecasts, and recommendations to senior leadership.
Accounting Operations & Controls
- Oversee general ledger, accounts receivable/payable, reconciliations, and payroll.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting processes.
- Coordinate the annual external financial audit.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Management
- Lead annual budgeting and ongoing forecasting with a focus on commission-based revenue variability.
- Monitor performance against budget and provide variance analysis.
- Manage cash flow, liquidity, banking relationships, and related financial risk.
Team Leadership
- Lead, develop, and mentor the accounting team.
- Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations.
- Promote accountability, collaboration, and continuous process improvement.
Business & Operational Support
- Partner with department leaders to evaluate the financial impact of business initiatives.
- Support pricing, compensation, and profitability analysis.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and automate financial processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Experience with insurance agency accounting and commission revenue strongly preferred.
- CPA highly preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, accounting principles, and financial management.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and strategic planning.
- Proven leadership experience with the ability to manage and develop a team.
Compensation & Benefits
- $200,000–$250,000 base salary
- 10% year-end bonus

Schedule
Hybrid – 2–3 days per week in the office
