Senior Underwriting Manager – Commercial Lines 

Job Summary

A growing insurance organization is seeking a Senior Underwriting Manager to lead a team of commercial lines underwriters within a program-driven environment. The Senior Underwriting Manager will play a critical leadership role, driving underwriting strategy, team performance, carrier collaboration, and process improvement across multiple lines of business. This individual will also serve as a key liaison between underwriting, operations, client solutions, and senior leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of underwriters and underwriting support staff, promoting a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Develop and implement strategies to meet growth and profitability targets across assigned programs.

  • Establish, track, and report on key performance metrics to evaluate underwriting quality and team effectiveness.

  • Conduct coaching sessions, performance reviews, and career development conversations to support team engagement and retention.

  • Provide oversight on underwriting decisions, ensuring consistency in pricing, risk evaluation, and adherence to underwriting authority.

  • Partner with carriers on audit coordination, reporting, and ongoing program performance discussions.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with departments such as distribution, operations, client service, and technology to align on business objectives.

  • Ensure underwriting compliance with regulatory guidelines and internal policies.

  • Oversee internal audit processes and prepare for external carrier reviews.

  • Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment that promotes innovation and professional growth.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

  • 5–10 years of experience in commercial property and casualty underwriting, ideally within a program or MGA setting.

  • Proven leadership experience with a track record of managing underwriting teams and delivering results.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives in a fast-paced environment.

  • Clear and confident communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret underwriting guidelines and apply sound judgment on risk selection and pricing.
