Job Title: Senior Underwriter - Primary General Liability (GL)
Job Summary
This position involves underwriting primary general liability (GL) policies with an increased level of responsibility. Under minimal oversight, the Senior Underwriter will evaluate complex submissions and develop strong relationships with agents, reinsurers, and key contacts. The role requires independent decision-making in selecting appropriate risks, managing high-value or complex accounts, and enhancing submission flows. Additionally, the Senior Underwriter will contribute to maintaining a profitable book of business and support underwriting-related projects.
Responsibilities
- Analyze, evaluate, accept, decline, rate, quote, and bind new or renewal submissions with high premium or risk exposure.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with producers, reinsurers, and other key industry contacts.
- Review complex submissions, including account losses, pricing models, and profitable premiums.
- Assess risk and profit potential by selecting appropriate risks for underwriting.
- Provide recommendations and communicate findings to internal teams and external contacts.
- Work on more complex risks than entry-level underwriters, utilizing a higher level of authority.
- Participate in continuing education to stay updated on industry trends and underwriting best practices.
- Collaborate with management to resolve non-standard underwriting issues and improve processes.
- Manage underwriting documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with internal standards.
- Contribute to special projects and other duties as needed.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in insurance, finance, risk management, business, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5+ years of underwriting experience, preferably in General Liability (GL) or a similar area.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess and process complex risk data.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency in using underwriting software to summarize and analyze data.
- Experience in applying underwriting judgment and approving, issuing, or modifying policies.
- Solid understanding of loss rating, credibility, and internal underwriting processes.
- Ability to work independently, demonstrating sound judgment in complex situations.
- Industry certifications (e.g., CPCU, ARM) or progress toward such certifications are preferred.
Compensation Package
- Salary: $105K - $145K per year (based on experience).
