Job Summary
Seeking a detail-oriented Commercial Farm & Agriculture Excess & Surplus (E&S) Underwriter to join a team. This role involves leveraging underwriting expertise and industry knowledge to support and grow a portfolio of agricultural and farm risks. The ideal candidate will have strong decision-making abilities and a track record of underwriting success.
The position involves close collaboration with brokers, agents, and internal stakeholders to evaluate risks, develop tailored insurance solutions, and maintain profitability while contributing to the long-term success of MGA operations.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate, analyze, and underwrite new and renewal submissions for farm, agriculture, and related risks within the Excess & Surplus (E&S) market independently or with guidance depending on complexity.
- Work with agents and brokers to assess client needs, offer customized risk management solutions, and provide sound underwriting decisions.
- Structure and price policies focused on sustainable growth, while adhering to underwriting guidelines and profitability targets.
- Stay current on regulatory requirements and industry trends impacting commercial farm and agricultural insurance.
- Build strong relationships with appointed agents, brokers, and internal departments to maximize growth opportunities and enhance client satisfaction.
- Monitor, manage, and underwrite accounts to maintain a balance between growth objectives and appropriate loss ratios.
- Contribute to annual business planning and strategic initiatives for agriculture lines of business.
- Communicate underwriting decisions, coverage options, and pricing structures clearly and within a timely manner.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and refining underwriting standards, guidelines, and workflows.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Agriculture, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of underwriting experience in a commercial/agricultural insurance environment or similar field, with a strong emphasis on E&S lines preferred.
- Strong understanding of farm and agricultural business operations, exposures, and associated coverage requirements.
- Familiarity with insurance forms, policy issuance, and underwriting processes within the E&S market.
- Proficient analytical skills, with the ability to assess and manage complex risks effectively.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills for building relationships with brokers, agents, and clients.
- Proficiency in industry-specific software, policy administration systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment while handling multiple priorities and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional designations such as CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter), ARM (Associate in Risk Management), or AU (Associate in Commercial Underwriting) are a plus.
- Background in agribusiness, farm operations, or related fields is highly desirable.
- Experience working with MGA underwriting platforms and processes.
