Commercial Auto/General Liability Claims Director

 

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for overseeing the claims process for a commercial auto and general liability portfolio, managing a team of Claims Adjusters who oversee Third-Party Administrators (TPA). The role involves providing technical expertise and oversight to Claims Account Managers in the handling of complex claims, ensuring adherence to coverage guidelines, and working with internal stakeholders to address high-complexity coverage issues. The director will also oversee policy limit demands, claims file reviews, and engage in the Trial Committee process, ensuring successful resolution strategies are developed for complex cases.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee a portfolio of 750 - 1,200 claims, managing policy limit demands and ensuring effective claims handling.
  • Provide technical oversight to Claims Account Managers and TPA Claims Handlers, particularly in the analysis and resolution of complex claims.
  • Collaborate with the AVP Chief Deputy on high-complexity coverage issues.
  • Conduct claim file reviews and work with TPAs to ensure claims are properly handled.
  • Manage the Trial Committee process, including reviewing cases set for trial, developing resolution strategies, and overseeing reporting to the home office.
  • Attend mediations and trials as necessary for complex cases.
  • Review and edit responses to Time Limit/Stowers/Policy Limit Demands.
  • Complete reserve reviews for general liability and automobile liability accounts.
  • Analyze various reports, including BI Predictive Modeling System and Large Loss Snapshots, to identify cases for further discussion or escalation.
  • Provide training on current claims topics to internal teams and facilitate calls to discuss ongoing claims-related issues.
  • Collaborate with liability directors and line managers to ensure consistency in claims handling processes across business units.
  • Identify opportunities for loss cost reduction and support strategies for improved financial outcomes.
  • Address regulatory issues, including Medicare, state insurance department audits, and workers' compensation board requirements.
  • Participate in claims-related projects as required.

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience overseeing multi-line claims, including auto and general liability.
  • At least 5 years of leadership/supervisory experience, ideally in a TPA or with TPA oversight; carrier experience is also required.
  • Strong background in coverage analysis, litigation management, and handling complex claims.
  • Juris Doctorate and/or professional liability claims handling experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Stowers Demand and its application in car accident cases.
  • Strong experience in managing underlying civil actions.
  • Proper adjuster licenses in all applicable states.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor teams with a collaborative approach.
  • Ability to manage and resolve state and federal regulatory issues effectively.
