Our client, a leading national insurance carrier, is seeking a Senior Regulatory Counsel – Claims Legal to provide expert legal and regulatory guidance on claims handling, compliance matters, and related operational practices. This individual will play a key advisory role to the claims organization, ensuring adherence to state and federal insurance laws while mitigating regulatory and litigation risks.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal counsel and strategic guidance on claims compliance, regulatory obligations, and claims handling practices across multiple lines of business.
- Review and interpret insurance laws, regulations, and Department of Insurance directives to ensure compliant claims operations.
- Partner with claims leadership to develop and implement best practices that align with evolving regulatory requirements.
- Support responses to regulatory inquiries, market conduct exams, and internal audits.
- Draft and review policy language, claims procedures, and internal compliance materials.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders including Compliance, Risk, and Legal teams to ensure consistent governance standards.
- Monitor emerging legal trends and legislative changes affecting claims and compliance functions.
- Provide training and education to claims personnel on legal and regulatory developments
Requirements:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school; active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum of 5+ years of legal experience, with a strong background in insurance regulatory law and claims compliance.
- Experience handling coverage disputes involving first-party property and/or third-party liability claims with an exposure of $250,000 or more including both primary and excess losses preferred.
- Prior experience advising an insurance carrier, TPA, or regulatory agency preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of insurance claims practices, unfair claims settlement statutes, and applicable state/federal insurance regulations.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to translate complex legal issues into practical business solutions.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
