Job Description

Senior Claims Counsel

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Work Arrangement: Hybrid | 3 days on-site / 2 days remote

We are seeking a Senior Claims Counsel to join a growing Claims Advocacy team at a highly collaborative commercial insurance organization. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced attorney seeking to move beyond the traditional billable-hour environment into a more consultative, client-focused role with strong work-life balance, broad exposure to multiple claim types, and long-term growth potential.

The Senior Claims Counsel will provide strategic claims guidance, manage and monitor complex matters, advocate on behalf of clients, and work closely with carriers, TPAs, outside counsel, and internal teams to help drive claims toward appropriate resolution.

The ideal candidate is an experienced, relationship-driven attorney who can quickly assess complex claims and legal issues, communicate recommendations clearly and concisely, and operate effectively in a smaller, entrepreneurial environment that values teamwork, professional development, and client service.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and monitor complex client claims across multiple P&C lines.
  • Review claim activity, identify issues, and provide strategic recommendations and next steps.
  • Communicate claim status, strategy, exposure, and recommendations to clients and internal teams.
  • Advocate directly with carrier claims professionals, TPAs, and outside counsel.
  • Evaluate coverage issues and assist with policy interpretation.
  • Oversee litigation strategy, outside counsel activity, case progression, budgets, and related claim issues.
  • Conduct legal research on coverage issues, case law, jury verdicts, and litigation trends.
  • Support claims across Workers’ Compensation, Auto, General Liability, E&O, Cyber, and other P&C exposures.
  • Participate in claims reviews and meetings with clients, carriers, TPAs, and outside counsel.
  • Review contracts and related claims and coverage considerations.
  • Partner with client service teams to support broader account strategy and client needs.
  • Participate in new business and client meetings as appropriate.
  • Support existing and new client relationships.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior Claims team members as appropriate.
  • Identify opportunities to improve claims processes, communication, and efficiency.
  • Travel occasionally for larger accounts, client meetings, and claims-related matters.

Required Experience / Qualifications / Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) required.
  • 5+ years of civil litigation, Workers’ Compensation, insurance litigation, claims, or similar legal experience.
  • Experience in private practice or within an insurance brokerage environment.
  • Strong litigation and claims management experience.
  • Bordereau reporting experience
  • Ability to evaluate complex legal and claims issues and communicate clear, concise recommendations.
  • Strong client-facing communication and relationship-management skills.
  • Experience working with carriers, TPAs, outside counsel, clients, and internal teams.
  • Strong judgment, accountability, professionalism, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple complex matters and priorities.
  • Comfortable working in a smaller, fast-moving organization.
  • Adaptable and comfortable taking ownership of client and claim matters.

Preferred Experience / Qualifications

  • Plaintiff and defense litigation experience.
  • Insurance defense experience.
  • Claims or litigation management experience.
  • Coverage analysis and policy interpretation experience.
  • Experience with Workers’ Compensation, General Liability, Auto, E&O, Cyber, or other P&C claims.
  • Experience managing complex or high-exposure claims.
  • Experience overseeing outside counsel and litigation strategy.
  • P&C license preferred.
  • TPA exposure is helpful but not required.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • No billable hours
  • Strong emphasis on work-life balance
  • Opportunity to transition from traditional litigation to a senior-level, consultative Claims Advocacy role.
  • Broad exposure across Workers’ Compensation, GL, Auto, E&O, Cyber, Commercial, and Personal Lines.
  • Direct interaction with clients, carriers, TPAs, and outside counsel.
  • Opportunity to apply litigation and legal experience without the traditional demands of a law firm.
  • Collaborative, relationship-focused environment.
  • Smaller team with strong visibility and access to leadership.
  • Opportunity to help support and develop a growing Claims function.
  • Flexibility around family and personal commitments.
  • Long-term growth and leadership potential.

Why the Role is Open?

  • This newly created position reflects the Claims Advocacy function's continued growth and expansion. The role adds senior-level expertise and support for existing and new client relationships, creates greater balance across the team, and supports the continued development of the claims function as the organization grows.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Target Compensation: $150K - $200K; commensurate with experience.
  • Hybrid schedule: 3 days on-site / 2 days remote.
  • On-site schedule is required.
  • Fully funded benefits.
