Workers' Compensation Defense Attorney (California)

Our client, a well-established insurance organization, is seeking an experienced Workers' Compensation Defense Attorney to join its in-house legal team. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney looking to handle complex workers' compensation matters while enjoying the flexibility of a remote, hybrid, or office-based work environment within California.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced litigator who can independently manage a full caseload of workers' compensation defense matters from inception through trial. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently manage a caseload of California workers' compensation defense files.
  • Investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and litigate claims through resolution, including trial when necessary.
  • Develop legal strategies and provide guidance on complex and high-exposure matters.
  • Partner with claims professionals, adjusters, and legal support staff to achieve favorable outcomes.
  • Conduct legal research, prepare pleadings, motions, discovery, and other legal documents.
  • Represent clients before the California Workers' Compensation Appeals Board.
  • Maintain accurate case documentation and proactively manage deadlines.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced attorneys when appropriate.
  • Participate in legal strategy discussions and collaborate with leadership on complex matters.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active California Bar license in good standing.
  • 10+ years of workers' compensation defense experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated trial experience handling California workers' compensation cases.
  • Experience managing complex or high-exposure claims.
  • Strong legal research, writing, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with attorneys, claims professionals, and support staff.
  • Proficiency with legal research platforms, Microsoft Office, and case management technology.

  • Strong courtroom presence and trial advocacy.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making abilities in complex legal matters.
  • Strong investigative and analytical skills.
  • Ability to mentor junior attorneys and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
  • Knowledge of workers' compensation insurance principles and claims operations.
