Associate Director, Tax Accounting

Our client, a well-established organization within the insurance and financial services industry, is seeking an Associate Director, Tax Accounting to join its growing tax function. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for an experienced tax professional with a strong background in income tax provision, compliance, and tax reporting.

The Associate Director will play a key role in overseeing the company’s income tax provision and return-related activities, ensuring accurate financial reporting, timely federal, state, and local tax compliance, and strong internal controls. This position also offers the opportunity to expand technical tax expertise, lead and mentor team members, and contribute to tax planning, audit support, process improvements, and strategic projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the income tax provision and financial reporting process in accordance with ASC 740 and SSAP 101, including tax entries, disclosures, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Lead tax forecasting, effective tax rate analysis, and ad hoc tax reporting and modeling.
  • Oversee federal, state, and local income tax compliance, including tax return preparation and review, filing coordination, and return-to-provision analysis.
  • Review tax deliverables and identify opportunities to improve processes, enhance efficiency, and strengthen internal controls.
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors to ensure engagements are completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule.
  • Support tax planning initiatives by identifying opportunities to optimize the organization’s tax position and mitigate potential risks.
  • Conduct technical tax research and provide guidance related to tax compliance, reporting requirements, and business initiatives.
  • Support tax audits and regulatory inquiries while monitoring changes in tax laws, regulations, and industry-specific requirements.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Accounting, Financial Reporting, Investments, Legal, Financial Planning & Analysis, and other internal stakeholders to provide tax guidance and insights.
  • Mentor and develop tax team members while promoting accountability, technical growth, and achievement of departmental objectives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • CPA or Enrolled Agent designation required.
  • 5–10 years of U.S. federal income tax experience required.
  • Strong experience with income tax provision and federal, state, and local tax compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of ASC 740 and SSAP 101 tax accounting and disclosure requirements.
  • Life and annuity insurance industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Public accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.
  • Experience with tax provision and income tax software platforms preferred.
  • Experience with enterprise financial or ERP systems is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop tax professionals.
  • Strong analytical, communication, organizational, and project management skills.

Compensation

  • $125,000–$165,000 base salary, plus comprehensive benefits and potential incentive compensation.
