Controller / Treasurer
Job Summary
Our client, a well-established property & casualty insurance company, is seeking a Controller/Treasurer who will be responsible for managing all accounting, financial reporting, treasury operations, and regulatory compliance. This is a hands-on role in a lean environment, requiring both strategic oversight and direct involvement in day-to-day accounting functions.
Responsibilities
- Lead and participate in monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
- Prepare and review GAAP and statutory financial statements.
- Maintain and reconcile the general ledger and supporting schedules.
- Prepare and file NAIC statutory statements and related schedules.
- Ensure compliance with all state insurance regulatory requirements.
- Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and investment coordination.
- Oversee premium collections, claims disbursements, and reinsurance settlements.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls over financial reporting.
- Ensure proper segregation of duties and compliance with audit standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes and increase efficiency.
- Partner with the CEO & President on financial matters and strategic initiatives.
- Serve as primary contact for auditors, regulators, and external partners.
- Collaborate with underwriting, claims, and operations teams.
- Prepare budgets and proforma statements.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- Active CPA designation required.
- 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Experience in property & casualty insurance strongly preferred.
- Experience managing or leading accounting functions and/or staff strongly preferred.
- Experience with NAIC statutory reporting preferred.
- Experience in a small or mid-sized insurance company preferred.
- Familiarity with reinsurance accounting and rating agencies (e.g., AM Best) preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and statutory accounting principles.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to operate in a hands-on, self-directed environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication across all levels of the organization.
- High level of integrity and accountability.
Compensation Package
- Salary: $140,000-$160,000 (depending on experience) + bonus opportunities
