Lead Surplus Underwriter

Job Summary

Seeking a highly experienced and motivated Lead Surplus Underwriter to join a dynamic team. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape and grow a robust Medical Professional Liability (MPL) portfolio within a well-established organization.

Compensation Package

  • Base Salary: $150,000 - $180,000 (up to $200,000 for exceptional candidates)
  • Bonus: 25% target bonus
  • Additional Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package available

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite healthcare business in accordance with company guidelines to ensure sound risk selection and profitable portfolio growth.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale and retail insurance brokers to deliver tailored insurance solutions for diverse healthcare accounts.
  • Partner with internal teams to drive growth in the mental healthcare segment and identify opportunities in additional healthcare classes.
  • Monitor MPL market trends and jurisdictional developments to execute targeted marketing initiatives and maintain competitive positioning.
  • Collaborate with Claims, Product Leadership, and Actuarial teams to design and price customized insurance solutions, including tailoring limits, coverage, and terms for complex risks.
  • Promote company products through marketing efforts, travel, and participation in industry conferences.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience underwriting medical professional liability in the excess and surplus lines (E&S) market.
  • Proven track record of managing relationships and leveraging established connections with wholesale and retail broker markets.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • RPLU designation is a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for client and broker engagement.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to independently produce and underwrite business.
  • Experience with healthcare groups, hospitals, physician groups, and mental healthcare/behavioral health risks is preferred.
