Job Description
Our client is seeking a highly experienced Claim Director / Attorney to join a dynamic claims team focused on Design & Miscellaneous Professional Liability matters. This is an excellent opportunity for a strategic, analytical professional to manage sophisticated, multi-party claims involving architects, engineers, surveyors, and other miscellaneous professionals.
In this role, you will oversee technically complex matters requiring expert analysis, creative problem-solving, and in-depth contractual risk transfer evaluation. You will have ownership of claims across a nationwide portfolio while partnering with a collaborative team of seasoned examiners dedicated to achieving favorable claim outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Independently manage complex professional liability claims involving design and miscellaneous professional risks.
- Handle both litigated and pre-litigation matters with a focus on resolving claims fairly, efficiently, and cost-effectively.
- Analyze policy coverage issues and prepare clear, well-supported coverage letters and documentation.
- Conduct timely and thorough claim investigations, including liability and damages assessments.
- Establish and adjust reserves appropriately throughout the life of the claim.
- Identify and pursue contractual risk transfer opportunities, including indemnity and additional insured recovery avenues.
- Direct outside counsel strategy, litigation management, and case resolution.
- Attend mediations, settlement conferences, and other proceedings as needed.
- Collaborate with underwriting, management, and internal stakeholders on claim strategy and exposure analysis.
Qualifications:
Experience/Education
- Juris Doctor (JD)
- 10+ years of claims handling and/or comparable legal experience
- Strong background in Design & Miscellaneous Professional Liability claims required
Skills & Competencies
- Significant experience handling claims under professional liability policies
- Strong knowledge of relevant case law, statutes, litigation procedures, and claim valuation
- Demonstrated success in complex investigations, coverage analysis, attorney management, and claim resolution
- Experience evaluating contractual indemnity and risk transfer opportunities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to effectively interact with insureds, claimants, brokers, underwriters, counsel, and senior leadership
- Highly organized, strategic thinker with sound judgment and strong negotiation skills
Compensation: $140,000 – $200,000 base salary + bonus
Location: Chicago, IL or New York, NY (Hybrid schedule: 2–3 days onsite)
