Premium Accounting Manager

A leading insurance organization is seeking an experienced Premium Accounting Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of its Premium Accounting and Cash Applications functions. This individual will play a key leadership role in ensuring the accurate and timely processing of insurance premiums, carrier payments, cash applications, accounts receivable, and related financial activities. The ideal candidate will have strong insurance accounting experience, a solid understanding of agency billing and premium accounting, and proven experience managing an accounting team.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the daily operations of the Premium Accounting and Cash Applications teams, including carrier payables, cash receipts, and application of cash.

• Manage the timely and accurate payment of insurance carriers and brokers.

• Monitor accounts receivable, collections, and premium balances.

• Partner with Account Executives, Producers, and internal service teams regarding premium and payment inquiries.

• Distribute monthly client statements and follow up on outstanding balances.

• Monitor and manage premium advances, collection activity, and items referred for outside collections.

• Oversee legal collections processes related to outstanding premiums.

• Manage daily cash application activities, including direct and agency-billed premiums.

• Oversee premium finance processes and related accounting functions.

• Review AR/AP balances and ensure they reconcile appropriately to the general ledger.

• Assist with external and internal audit requests related to AR/AP and premium accounting.

• Monitor customer advances, payment plans, and high-volume client reconciliations.

• Provide reporting and analysis related to premium receivables, payables, and producer commissions.

• Identify opportunities to improve workflows, processes, and internal controls.

• Partner with senior finance leadership on special projects and process improvement initiatives.

• Assign workloads, establish priorities, coordinate vacation and backup coverage, and ensure financial deadlines are consistently met.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred.

• 7+ years of experience in AR/AP or accounting operations, including management experience.

• Insurance industry experience a plus.

• Strong understanding of insurance premiums, commissions, receivables, payables, and general ledger accounting.

• Experience with insurance agency billing strongly preferred.

• Experience with Applied Systems platforms such as EPIC or TAM is a plus.

• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop an accounting team.

• Solid understanding of internal controls and accounting processes.

Compensation: $110,000–$120,000 base salary, plus benefits.

Overview
The Premium Accounting & Billing Manager will oversee the daily execution of our premium collection and billing workflows. You will lead a team of specialists, ensuring zero-balance accuracy in reconciliation's and maintaining seamless financial coordination between clients and insurance carriers. This is a high-impact leadership role with visibility across finance, operations, and client-facing teams.

This role in San Antonio with a TPA (Third Party Administrator). You’d be owning the full billing cycle—billing, collections, and reconciliation—while leading a small team.

Key Responsibilities

• Daily Operations: Supervise the end-to-end billing cycle, including invoice generation, premium collection, and timely remittance to carriers.
• Team Leadership: Manage daily activities for a small team of premium specialists, providing hands-on support and ensuring all deadlines are met.
• Financial Reconciliation: Directly perform and review complex reconciliation's of eligibility data against premium payments to ensure financial integrity.
• Carrier & Vendor Point of Contact: Serve as the primary liaison for insurance carriers regarding premium audits, delinquency resolution, and funding discrepancies.
• Compliance & Audit Support: Maintain meticulous records to ensure adherence to ERISA and HIPAA standards; prepare documentation for annual audits.
• Reporting: Develop and monitor daily/weekly reports on billing accuracy, aging reports, and collection cycle times for the management team.

Qualifications

• Experience: 3–5 years of hands-on experience in premium accounting, billing, or financial operations within the insurance or TPA industry.
• Software Skills: Strong proficiency in Sage or similar accounting software is required.
• Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of self-funded health plans and multi-tier billing structures.
• Compliance: Basic understanding of regulatory requirements (ERISA, ACA) governing premium handling.
• Preferred: Familiarity with the Davis-Bacon Act or Service Contract Act (SCA) fringe benefit administration.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
